As you might have read about here and here, Susan Shie's lecture at The Textile Study Group of New York was really inspiring! Now I don't quilt, I have had a few failed attemps, and I have never tried airbrushing. I was mostly excited about hearing about how she incorporates type into her quilts. Most of the text is her just journaling or telling stories. She does include poetry and definitions. She outlines the shapes and then airbrushes the color. Then she just freeflows the text...her process is incredible and they are huge. She sees it as a jounal so she crosses things out and goes out of line and doesn't worry about it. Oh, then she takes the cloth and quilts it, adds beading and embroidery. Even the backings are great. When you see them in person, you can't help but touch them.
Her ongoing series she is working on is called "Kitchen Tarrot". Which will be 70 wall hangings, each depicting a different tarrot card...with a kitchen theme ofcourse. Here is one of her pieces:

At her lecture, she said "You should try drawing an eggbeater!" Ironically, the laterest ATC theme challenge is "Kitchen"...so I drew an eggbeater and a pot and a cheesegrater. I made a blanketstitch on the edge...it needed something!
The next TSGNY lecture is March 21. I'll post info shortly...if your in NYC you should come. It will be a good one!
